Sleep Dentistry- Anxiety Free Dentistry!
If you are afraid to go to the dentist, relax! Sedation dentistry and a trained sedation dentist can change your life for the better!
OFor some people, the unpleasantness of a dental appointment isn't so much fear as it is stress from the "claustrophobia" when dental instruments and hands enter the mouth. Fortunately, there is a solution to the problem- anxiety free dentistry!
Many patients visit us for routine dental procedures such as dental restorations (fillings), root canal treatments and extractions. Cosmetic dentistry such as crowns and bridges and certain phases of implant dentistry can also be done in the dental chair. Whatever you need, there is no better way to undergo dental treatment than with sleep dentistry if you have a significant phobia about the dentist.
Who can benefit from sleep dentistry?
Sleep dentistry can benefit people who:
- Are fearful or anxious about receiving dental treatment
- Dislike needles in the mouth
- Have a low tolerance to pain
- Have had a traumatic experience with dentistry in the past
- Dislike the noises, smell, tastes of dentistry
- Gag easily and cannot tolerate other objects in their mouths
- Have difficulty getting numb
- Have jaw problems or have difficulty keeping their mouth open
- Have complex dental problems or need long sessions in the dental surgery
- Are busy and wish to have more work done in fewer sessions
Recent studies have shown that individuals with poor dental health have a higher risk of being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It is therefore important that your general dental health is maintained in order to enjoy optimal general health as well. After a comprehensive examination with Dr. Melanie Chan, she will suggest different methods of sleep dentistry-administration of anti-anxiety agents by either oral, inhalation or intravenous methods. For extremely fearful patients, general anaesthesia may be necessary. With any of the above sedation techniques, you would need transport to and from the dental practice safely.
When you arrive for your appointment, you may feel drowsy but awake, depending on the type of pre-medication you may have taken prior to your visit. Most importantly, you will feel more relaxed and anxiety free. While you are in the chair, Dr. Chan and the dental team will monitor you very closely. You will not be unconscious, but will just be in a soothing mental and emotional "distance" from all that is happening.
Before you know it, the procedure will be finished and it is time to go home-thanks to sleep dentistry! Ask us for more information at your comprehensive dental examination appointment.
